CHAPTER 22

August 20, 1954

Skye looked back and realized that the day she brought Phillip home from the hospital was the turning point for all of them. Carrie’s long road of recovery took the entire time Skye carried Phillip. As Skye struggled with her difficult pregnancy, Carrie slowly healed from the accident and the death of her boyfriend.

Carrie’s face, ripped open in several places when she went through the windshield, had healed with scars that her plastic surgeon called “barely visible.” Her worst injury, a broken femur, caused her immense pain and threatened her ability to walk without a limp. By the time Skye went into labor, Carrie could walk short distances, assisted by a cane. Almost finished with nursing school when the accident occurred, Carrie insisted on being in the delivery room when her mother pushed out Phillip. After all, she reminded her, she’d delivered Skye’s last baby.

Three weeks later, Martin took the whole family out to eat, including Anders and their cook, Nellie. Make-up covered Carrie’s scars and a casual observer would have never known there were problems in the Poschett household.

Josephine lapsed into a deep depression when Carrie was injured. She wouldn’t go to school or leave the house. Afraid Carrie would die, she wouldn’t leave her side, both at the hospital and while at home recovering.

Martin hired a home tutor to get Josephine through the missed school work. Mad and disillusioned by Josephine’s depression, he failed to see how it tied to losing her mother. Martin threatened to send her to a boarding school but Skye wouldn’t let him, insisting he get counseling for her. Once a week, a woman came to their house and sat down with Josephine and talked to her about her fears.

She suggested they let Josephine help Carrie learn to walk again. That gave her a goal and made her feel like a part of Carrie’s healing. The day after Carrie’s cast was discarded, Josephine took her by the shoulder and they walked ten steps. After Carrie walked to the mail box and back, they ventured to the office that had been Skye’s house. Sometimes they circled the wine flasks in the warehouse.

But nothing helped as much as the challenge of keeping up with Skye’s pregnancy. Once a week, the girls measured Skye’s stomach and counted down the days to her delivery date. They found things for the baby in the Sears catalog and Skye ordered the items. Carrie reminded her mother how they had ordered baby diapers once before but the rest of the baby clothes were hand made from feed sacks. A lot had changed.

Ross retreated to a new world as the girls became more and more obsessed with the coming baby. Once he knew Carrie would be okay, he turned to the vineyard for comfort. After school each day, he’d run to find Anders or Martin and he’d walk the fields with them. He learned how to identify the grapes, how they progressed to ripeness and followed the process of wine making from buds to bottle.
